The teacher is happy to help you help your child in music

Green Flag #3

This is a pretty simple one.  A really great teacher understands that most music practice is going to happen outside of the classroom.   Therefore, it makes sense to invest in helping you as much as they help your child.

In my classroom and my studio, there are comfortable chairs in the room (out of sight of the working child). When parents want to come and observe, I happily make arrangements for them to come and see what we’re doing.  

BIG WARNING HERE: If you do come and observe at your child’s class or lesson, keep in mind that there is a very important balance that has to be maintained in the music room.  If you jump in, interrupt, or try to take over a music classroom, it doesn’t help anyone.  Observation is just that - observation.   Come and see, but make a commitment both to your child and to the teacher to be unobtrusive in the classroom, and to be supportive of the teacher with your words after you leave.
