FAQs

  • It’s only practical.

Making Musicians is all about making the latest research work in your classroom. If it doesn’t make your work easier, than it doesn’t make it into this training.

We work to ensure that these trainings aren’t too academic. The goal is to bring the best research to you in the easiest-digestable way.

  • Live training is very flexible and can easily fit any budget!

While we love doing residencies and long-form trainings, we offer different formats like small group sessions, shorter workshops, or even virtual classes that save on travel and facility costs.

Plus, we can customize the program to focus on the most important topics for your specific music teaching setting, so you get exactly what you need.

Many trainers also offer tiered pricing or payment plans, making it easier for teachers and schools with tight budgets to join in.

  • The most effective way to schedule an online training for your group is by either filling out the form at the bottom of our Topics for Training page, or emailing admin@iamschoolofmusic.com. Make sure to tell us:

    • Your name and the name of your group

    • What kind of work your group does

    • What kind of training you are interested in (or whether you need guidance to find the right training!

  • ABSOLUTELY.

We often contract with school districts and regional education centers to do specific PD for music teachers. We started offering this as a response to the complaint we often heard: “None of this PD is really any good for my music classroom!”

As a matter of fact. while we don’t advertise this widely, we have occasionally done SEL Brain Training for entire district trainings - even for non-music teachers.

  • The Multiple-Day Emotionally Intelligent Music Instruction Residency gives you the training and the practice you need to get started with EIMI.

EIMI, or Emotionally Intelligent Music Instruction is teaching music with the function and the implications of the uniquely musical brain always in mind.  But EIMI isn’t just knowledge of the musical brain - it’s understanding how to use that knowledge in the classroom.

What happens during a Multiple-Day EIMI Residency?

Before the residency, a group virtual meeting with be planned to find out more about you! Getting the lay of the land will help us understand your unique needs.

On the first day - usually a Monday - we will spend a full day doing a deep dive into the new discoveries of Applied Music Psychology.  We will spend a whole Professional Development day getting into the special specifics about how music works in the brain - and how to apply that in your classroom.

But it’s not enough to talk about how to make something work in the classroom. Emotionally Intelligent Music Instruction is a skill.  It’s something that almost requires a little bit of apprenticeship.

So, on days two, three, and four, we will travel to your classrooms and schools, and we’ll start applying EIMI in your classes.  Through demonstrations and time spent working with your students, you’ll start to see how EIMI works, the difference that it can make, and how to apply it to you.

In the following weeks, you will get one-on-one time with Allison to get personalized plans for how to practice those skills in YOUR context.

  • It’s a masterclass!

In this masterclass, the skill being mastered is Emotionally Intelligent Music Instruction - that is, teaching music with the function and the implications of the uniquely musical brain always in mind.

    How does it work?

Each teacher who attends gets a block of time to work on some music with a small group of their own students. In that time, Allison will work with you and your students to

    • Improve one piece that they know,

    • Develop one piece they are working on, and

    • Experience one piece they’ve never tried before.

As you work, you will give you tips, pointers, correction and instruction. The focus isn’t on the students, it’s on YOU and your teaching.  You will get to hone YOUR teaching skills, and watch as others learn and grow as well.  It’s a collaborative and hands-on way to practice EIMI.
